Mobile Sites More Important Than Ever

A few years ago, it was rare to find websites that could be described as truly ‘mobile friendly’. The desktop computer ruled the roost when it came to website layouts, but fast forward to 2015 and the emphasis has very much changed. With the use of mobiles now at an all time high, many websites are switching to this recommended, modern format. That means, they are able to be viewed on all kinds of devices, from smartphones and tablet, to laptops and desktop computers.

If you are running a business, it is important to adapt to the changing Internet. Many prospective customers will refer to their smartphone before making a purchase. In particular, they will likely look at their phone first and foremost to find a product or service, look at reviews, visit your website, then (hopefully) make an enquiry. However, this cannot be achieved without a mobile friendly site.

The so-called ‘Mobile-Friendly Algorithm’ which is due to be released by Google later this month (April) means websites that cannot be easily read on multiple devices will suffer in the search rankings. This latest release from Google is said to be a significant update – one that will make a large impact. For businesses under any doubt, now is the time to ensure your websites are mobile ready, not just for search engines, but the human visitor as well. Nobody wants to continually scroll and zoom when using a smartphone, and your website should reflect this.

It is important to establish how many visitors are viewing your pages from a mobile device. Website tracking software can be used for this purpose. If you haven’t already considered how many mobile visitors you are getting, this can often come as a surprise. In many cases, website owners are unaware of the large percentage of visitors accessing a site via mobile. In fact, in one case, the number was over 50% – 1 in 2 visitors accessed the site, but were greeted by a cumbersome, desktop only version. As you can imagine, this was not ideal for business.
